Production planning is the function of looking ahead, anticipating difficulties to be faced and the likely remedial steps to remove them. It may be said to be a technique of forecasting ahead every step in the long process of production, taking them at a right time and in the right degree and trying to complete the operations at maximum efficiency. Production control, on the other hand, guides and directs flow of production so that products are manufactured in a best way and conform to a planned schedule and are of the right quality. A long-term view of production planning is necessary to fully optimize the production flow.

Production planning is required for scheduling, dispatch, inspection, quality management, inventory management, supply management and equipment management. Production control ensures that production team can achieve required production target, optimum utilization of resources, quality management and cost savings.

Production Planning:
Production planning is done at three different time dependent levels i.e. long-range planning dealing with facility planning, capital investment, location planning, etc.; medium-range planning deals with demand forecast and capacity planning and lastly short term planning dealing with day to day operations.

Production planning is one part of production planning and control dealing with basic concepts of what to produce, when to produce, how much to produce, etc. It involves taking a long-term view at overall production planning. Therefore, objectives of production planning are as follows:

  1. To ensure right quantity and quality of raw material, equipment, etc. are available during times of production.
  2. Ensure capacity utilization is in tune with forecast demand at all the time.
  3. Arranging production schedules according to the needs of marketing department.
  4. Organization can deliver a product in a timely and regular manner.
  5. Supplier are informed will in advance for the requirement of raw materials.
  6. It reduces investment in inventory.
  7. It reduces overall production cost by driving in efficiency.

Production Control:
Production control cannot be same across all the organization.Production control looks to utilize different type of control techniques to achieve optimum performance out of the production system as to achieve overall production planning targets. Therefore, objectives of production control are as follows:

  1. Regulate inventory management
  2. To determine the requirements for men, materials and equipment.
  3. Production of various inputs at a right time and in right quantity.
  4. Arranging production schedules according to the needs of marketing department.
  5. Optimum utilization of resources and production process
  6. It maintains standard of quality through the production life cycle.
  7. Control wastage of resources

Objectives of Production Planning and Control:
Planning of production precedes control. Whatever is planned needs to be controlled. The ultimate objective of both planning and control is to use various inputs in an efficient way and to have a proper control over various targets and schedules fixed earlier.

The objectives of production planning and control can vary from one business to another.

  1. Regulation of inventory management
  2. Optimum utilization of production process and resources
  3. To ensure capacity utilization is aligned with forecast demand
  4. To make sure the right quality and quantity of equipment, raw materials and more are available during production times

Benefits of Production Planning and Control:

  1. To determine the requirements for men, materials and equipment.
  2. Production of various inputs at a right time and in right quantity.
  3. Making most economical use of various inputs.
  4. Arranging production schedules according to the needs of marketing department.
  5. Reduced waste of resources
  6. Smooth flow of all production processes
  7. Better supplier communication for raw materials procurement
  8. Production cost savings
  9. It also ensures that production time is kept at optimum level and thereby increasing the turnover time.
  10. It ensures that inventory level are maintained at optimum levels at all time, i.e. there is no over-stocking or under-stocking.

Role of Production Planning and Control in Manufacturing Industry:
The role of Production Planning and Control (PPC) in the manufacturing industry is very important for ensuring efficient and effective production operations. PPC in apparel industry is crucial for effective production management, meeting customer demands, ensuring quality standards, optimizing resources, and driving operational efficiency. It enables manufacturers to enhance productivity, reduce costs, and maintain a competitive edge in the market.

The role of production planning and control in the manufacturing industry is to ensure that materials and equipment are available when needed and that everything runs smoothly.

Component traceability and procurement has special challenges in the electronics industry that require diligent planning. The end goal is the most efficient and profitable production possible.

PPC in the apparel industry aims to optimize production efficiency, minimize costs, and deliver high-quality garments within the desired timelines. It requires effective planning, coordination, and control of resources, processes, and schedules to meet customer demands, maintain profitability, and stay competitive in the dynamic fashion market. Production planning and control are essential for customer delight and overall success of an organization. Production planning and control is the coordination of a series of functions according to a plan which will economically utilize the plant facilities and regulate the orderly movement of goods through the entire manufacturing cycle, from the procurement of all materials to the shipping of finished goods at a predetermined rate.
